Not sure exactly
what I expected at this price point, so I've tried to balance my comments
accordingly. First of all, the item is very neat and well-organized. The
instruction manual is very good, and the keys/logic are very straightforward to
use/learn. Basically, this is just a box with a camera phone that takes pics of
your slides/negative. There's 2 resolution settings; use the high one, gives
files ~3-4 MB each.
Good/great:
small, lightweight, easy to learn/use, seems like a decent price-point.
Not so
good/great:
- The
slide/film carriers sometimes slip out a little from the base unit,
leaving edges/shadows in the scans.
- It
doesn't handle 'curled' negatives very well. Sometimes it won't feed
through the mechanism.
- It
takes a bit of getting used to slide slides in the tray.
- You
need an SD card to operate this unit, which wasn't immediately clear from
the description.
Despite these
minor issues, I found it quite functional and useful for digitizing my old
photos.

Headed into foot surgery and 9 weeks of being very stationary (with elevated foot) afterwards, I needed projects to fill my time. Scanning old photos was one of them. I was able to set up the scanner on a small table in front of the couch so that I could scan from a sitting or lying position. The scanner was easy to learn and use. I chose to scan photos directly to my laptop, and the instructions for doing this were clear.
The auto-feed function for photos was easy to use, and I appreciated that photos could be inserted anywhere along the width of the scanner rather than carefully positioned by size. They scanned quickly (3 - 5 seconds per photo), and the resulting digital images were very good. I used the scanner for several hours a day for about 5 weeks, and it continues to function well. I will update this review if it fails in the coming year, but if not - I consider it a very good buy.
Bottom Line
The Kodak SLIDE N SCAN Digital Film Scanner is more than just a gadget; it's a bridge to the past, allowing you to relive and preserve your precious memories.
