Title: Brilliant Device
Rating: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Date: March 15, 2024
Review: I had to come and
write the review to counteract all the negative nellies who can't seem to
manage to set this up or figure out how to watch TV apps other than on their
native TV's OS. So, there is no Tablo app for the LG Web OS system or
Samsung's, that seems to be the major complaint, or more like "it doesn't
work with my LG TV". Who cares? LG makes great TV's, but their WEB OS
absolutely sucks. I use an Nvidia Shield for all my streaming apps and it is
night and day better than LG's app interface. Anyway, that aside, you need a
streaming device that Tablo has written their app for, IE any Android TV
device, Roku and Fire stick. You need to install the app on a mobile device to
facilitate setting up the Tablo, obviously Android and iOS are supported.
Once I had a decent antenna
installed, I had no trouble configuring the Tablo to stream programming to all
the streaming devices in my house. I live a fair distance from any of my local
TV stations so an amplified antenna, mounted high in my house (I chose to put
it in the attic) was necessary to get a good signal. Once it was in the optimum
direction, the channel scan found all my local affiliates plus PBS stations.
Visit antennaweb.org before you start to get an idea of the location and
direction of all your local TV stations. My only grumble is it found further
away affiliates whose signal is not reliable and added to my channel list. I
wish there was a way to simply just exclude these from my channel list.
Recording works like a charm but works better if you override the option to
record from any channel and always direct your series recording to your most
local affiliate with a strong signal.
The guide is pretty flawless and is
always up to date with programming for 2 weeks out. Recording options and setup
is simple and intuitive. The bonus streaming channels that come in over your
internet connection are a nice addition too, these channels can be recorded
too, just like the OTA channels. For live TV, we always watch the shows that we
like from the DVR, so we can always skip commercials. I particularly like The
Outside channel which I'd never had before both when we were a cable customer
and a YouTube TV customer. Who even knew there was a streaming channel entirely
devoted to the comedy series Portlandia? We are watching on both the Nvidia
Shield and a Roku Streaming stick.
I did at first try it with a much
older Roku device, but realized this just didn't have the power to run the
Tablo app properly. The signal that most TV stations broadcast over the air is
also higher definition than what cable or YouTube TV is rebroadcasting, so get
ready for a much higher quality picture. The only glitches I've seen so far
are: When viewing a recorded program from the library if using the
"Recent" part of the menu, rather than the "All Recording"
menu selection, on returning to the "Recent" menu, recorded program
icons can be missing. But if you go down to "All Recordings" and back
again, the icons will return. When using the favorites part of the Live TV
Guide, sometimes not all the program details will fill in on the grid for the
streaming channels, but you can see them OK, if selecting All Channels.
Occasionally when the app starts, you'll see a spinning clock and the message "It's taking longer than usual to connect to Tablo" If this happens, I back out of the app and start again, then it works fine. If your Internet is down for some reason, the Tablo is unusable and you can't watch any shows, which seems counter intuitive, you should still be able to watch OTA channels and the DVR without an internet connection as long as your Wi-Fi is up. Of course, the guide may not be updated. This especially and the bugs listed above I expect to be fixed in a future software update. My wife and I are so happy with this device as we found 90% of what we watched on YouTube TV were the network affiliates and not the "cable" type channels, the rest of our viewing is usually Netflix, Prime, Hulu or ESPN+. We don't miss all those other channels and are glad of the $75 per month savings. Highly recommended.
People Also Ask
How much does Tablo cost per month?
Tablo TV does not require a monthly subscription fee. Once you purchase
the Tablo device and an antenna, there are no ongoing costs for accessing live,
local TV channels or using the DVR functionality. However, you may incur
additional costs if you choose to subscribe to premium streaming services or
purchase external storage for the DVR.
What channels do you get with Tablo TV?
With Tablo TV, you can access live, local TV channels from major networks
like ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC, as well as a selection of free streaming channels.
The channels you receive depend on your location and the strength of your
antenna signal. Additionally, Tablo offers the ability to access more than 60
additional free streaming channels over the internet, enhancing your viewing
options.
Does Tablo require an antenna?
Yes, Tablo TV requires an antenna to receive over-the-air (OTA) TV
signals. The antenna captures signals broadcast by local TV stations, allowing
you to watch live TV channels for free. Tablo then streams these channels to
your devices over your home network, providing whole-home access to OTA TV.
Is Tablo TV worth the money?
Whether Tablo TV is worth the investment depends on your individual needs and preferences. For cord-cutters looking to access live, local TV channels without monthly subscription fees, Tablo offers a cost-effective solution. Its DVR functionality allows you to record shows and watch them on multiple devices, providing flexibility and convenience. Additionally, Tablo's compatibility with popular streaming devices and seamless integration with streaming services make it a versatile option for enhancing your entertainment setup. Ultimately, if you value the ability to watch OTA TV channels and record your favorite shows without ongoing subscription costs, Tablo TV may be worth the investment.
