How Do 12V Refrigerators Work?

How Do 12V Refrigerators Work?

Compressor vs. Thermoelectric Cooling

One of the key distinctions among 12V refrigerators lies in their cooling mechanisms. There are primarily two types: compressor cooling and thermoelectric cooling.

  • Compressor Cooling: Compressor-based 12V refrigerators operate much like their household counterparts. They use a compressor, refrigerant, and a condenser to circulate coolant through the system. This process creates a continuous cycle of compression and expansion, removing heat from the interior compartment. Compressor refrigerators are known for their rapid cooling, precise temperature control, and ability to maintain low temperatures even in high ambient temperatures. They are suitable for use in various environments and are favored for reliability.
  • Thermoelectric Cooling: Thermoelectric 12V refrigerators employ a different principle known as the Peltier effect. They utilize a thermoelectric module that creates a temperature differential between its two sides when an electrical current passes through it. This temperature difference is harnessed to cool one side while expelling heat from the other. Thermoelectric coolers are more compact and lightweight, making them energy-efficient and quieter. However, they are generally better suited for maintaining temperatures above freezing and may not be as effective in extremely hot environments.

Customer CommentsI have a 30-foot sailboat equipped with a basic icebox requiring ice loading prior to a cruise. 60 lbs of ice in the box will last about six days in moderate weather if the box is properly managed; that is, everything is pre-cooled before placing it in the box, and no warm stuff is added later. Also, the number of open/closed cycles needs to be minimized.

This is a hassle I have lived with for 20 years. Due to the hassle factor, hole-cutting requirements, and space, I have not been enthusiastic about converting to box refrigeration.

So when these compact 12VDC coolers reached what looked like decent maturity, I purchased a unit to supplement my icebox and can be easily removed from the boat for road trips and other uses.

My selection process was pretty simple: decent reviews, the lowest cost, and correct sizing for my application. Not too small, not too big. Initially, I wanted a cooler/freezer combo. However, the prices on those went up significantly, and I noted this unit could be divided into two compartments, so I thought I might be able to set it up to deliver a kind of cooler/freezer clone if I got the temp set right.

So first, I had to install cigarette lighter outlets that would support the current draw of the cooler. No problem in a car, but on a boat, most cig lighter outlets are wired for low-power applications, and the two I had would not support the load, which can be up to 5 amps during compressor start-up. In max (not eco) mode, the unit draws about 3 amps when the compressor runs. When the compressor is not running, it pulls much less power. I saw 30% compressor on time in temps around 70 - 75 ambient. So, I was pulling around 2 amps on average, or 24 watts/hr hourly. I was very happy with this performance; however, I expect summer temps to increase power usage significantly. These numbers are important for a sailor because we rely almost exclusively on battery banks and solar/wind charging. Bottom line: really happy with power consumption numbers.

Important note to anyone using other than a standard car cig lighter, which is designed to handle higher current. When I attempted to use my cig lighter outputs on the boat, the unit would start up. However, the input voltage display on the cooler showed a rapidly decreasing input voltage to the point where the unit's low voltage protection would turn the cooler off. Turns out the wiring to my cig lighter socket was such a small gauge that as soon as it was loaded up, it would begin dropping the output voltage to an unacceptable level. If you are rolling your outlets, select a wire gauge to minimize voltage drop between the cooler and your batteries. I used 10awg wire, which is probably overkill, but I wanted the cooler to see almost the same voltage as the battery.

The above is meaningless unless the unit does a decent job of cooling/freezing. Moreover, it does that well in my experience so far (I used the cooler 24/7 for my last 6-day cruise). As planned, I used the center divider to create a cooler/freezer combo. I placed my frozen stuff in the compartment closest to the control panel and my beer in the other compartment set the unit to 25 degrees, and waited for the beer to freeze or the frozen stuff to thaw. Neither did either. The beer stayed cold as heck, and the frozen stuff stayed frozen! Outstanding. I was pleased.

Good power consumption, good cooling performance, no noise (but my hearing is not the best), can make it work as a combo cooler freezer, lightweight and portable, relatively low center of gravity for a solid tie-down (sailors will appreciate this), and physical properties like door opening and control accessibility are excellent.

You do have to fuss around with the controls a bit to figure them out. Note to the manufacturer - get an English speaker (or whatever language with English subtitles) to do a video to explain how to use the controls. As usual, the delivered manual is mostly gibberish. There are third-party videos online, but, come on, manufacturers, this is not hard. You have a great product. How hard can it be to produce great instructions?

So, the final topic is space. The 30 Qt seemed like an excellent compromise between size, weight, and capacity. This is not a large capacity, just about a cubic foot. However, it is more space than you might imagine if you imagine a cubic foot. The first thing is to cool or freeze your stuff before loading it (I am speaking to sailors in particular). You can also use shore power to do the initial cooling, of course, using the provided 110 VAC adapter, but you do not want to do the initial cool-down on your batteries if you can avoid it. This pre-cool is particularly important if you want to do a cooler/freezer. I suspect freezing something will freeze everything in the box, but if you pre-cool, you can find that Goldilocks temp that keeps the two compartments just right. I kept my beer cold and a Cornish game hen frozen solid for the full 6 days. However, the beer was cold, and the hen was frozen going into the box before the trip.

Okay, back to space. I loaded 9 16 Oz cans of beer in the cooler side with a small quantity of room left if I wanted to stuff something smaller. On the freezer side, I had two steaks, the Cornish game hen, a tray of sausage, three lamb chops, and a big bag of M&Ms, which I eat frozen (try it; you will love it). Moreover, I have significant extra space. I could have added a bag or two of frozen veggies easily.

So, overall, my first impression after six days of living with this thing 24/7 using my house batteries and 200 watts of solar panels has been excellent. I am extremely pleased with the performance, size, ease of use, and appearance. Longevity will be the next test, but the manufacturer upgrades to a 3-year warranty on the unit, providing a little confidence that they have built some longevity into it.

Customer CommentsUpdated: The manufacturer contacted me about offering me a refund because it was damaged when being built and quality control was nonexistent. I am also having trouble shutting it off with the button on the panel, so I mentioned it. Now they want me to take pictures and videos of the problems. Pain in the butt. They offered to replace it, and I now need to email them stuff before they do anything. This is aggravating. Should have sent it back to Amazon immediately.

I was looking for something smaller to throw in the car, and this unit works perfectly. Cools down quickly and does a good job of keeping the stuff cool without using much power. It is noisier than my Whynter and ICECO units but works identically. Controls are easier to use because they are on the top of the unit. The outer case is not as stout, but I did not expect it to be for the money. The Pro units would probably be closer to the other manufacturers that own them. I have had it powered up in the corner of my living room for the last two weeks with various beverages to test it.

I am having trouble turning it off on the control panel. Something is not right. The power went out during a storm for a couple of hours, and it was nice to see that the unit came back on itself when the power was restored. Going to run it as a freezer today in the car and buy a big tub of ice cream. Nice not to have to hurry home and get it into the freezer ASAP. With the 3-year warranty, I figure it will last a long time. I was disappointed that the case was damaged when it was built and shipped this way. They offered to refund my money, but it works okay, so I'm keeping it. For the money, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a portable fridge.

Customer Comments: We got this for a two-week trip to use on the way and during our rental stay, as well as the return trip home. It ran perfectly using 12V power during an 8-10 hour drive during the heat of a July summer. Everything was kept nice and cold all the way!

We used it at our rental for personal items and to make a trip for groceries, including ice cream. It did the job perfectly.

However, this story gets better......we were home months later, and our main fridge (we have two, the main one in the kitchen and an old one in the garage) began to fail and lose cooling.

We moved as much as we could to our old fridge in the garage, but we used the BougeRV fridge for items we used daily: creamer, butter, milk, etc.

This cooler saved the day! Beyond that, it holds temp perfectly. We found it so efficient that we tended to raise the desired temp setting by a few degrees since it can get too cold and head toward a freezer range instead. I suggest trying a temp about 4 degrees higher than preferred and going from there to tweak the perfect setting.

I cannot praise enough how well and dependable this BougeRV fridge/freezer combo has been. It worked perfectly on 12v as well as 120v a/c.

We used this during travel during a very hot week in July 2022, and it never had any issues. The economy mode during driving and parking to reduce battery drain never affected the cooling nor our stored items in this fridge.

Its noise level will not bother even a person with excellent hearing, and just remember how loud your kitchen fridge might be compared to this quieter version!

Five stars, and we will use it on every trip!

Conclusion:

In conclusion, 12V refrigerators have revolutionized the way we keep our perishables cool on the move. Whether you are a frequent camper, long-haul trucker, or adventurer, these portable fridges offer a reliable cooling solution. By understanding their operation, choosing the right model, and following maintenance tips, you can make the most of your 12V refrigerator. So, confidently gear up for your next adventure, knowing that your food and drinks will stay refreshingly cool, even in the remotest of locations.
